Nitrogen fertilizer is one of the major inputs for corn (Zea mays L.) production. Chlorophyll meter is a useful tool that can be used to predict plant's nitrogen need. This experiment was conducted to evaluate prediction of corn nitrogen requirement, split application, and corn yield response to the applied nitrogen by using chlorophyll meter readings. This study was conducted in a randomized complete block design with five treatments (T1-T5): control without any nitrogen fertilizer; nitrogen fertilizer applied based on 50%, 75%, and 100% of the required nitrogen) and 3 replications. Phosphorus and potassium fertilizers were applied at planting time according to soil test. Nitrogen fertilizer was applied as split at various growth stages. Leaf sampling and chlorophyll meter readings were performed at different stages of plant growth including 3-, 5-, 7-, and 10-leaf and tasselling and silking stages (V3, V5, V7, V10, VT, R1). Nitrogen concentrations of leaves were determined at the abovementioned various growth stages. Finally, the total yield, leaf yield (t/ha) and relationship between chlorophyll meter readings and yield response to different amounts of nitrogen were determined during various growth stages. According to the results of the experiment, T4 and T5 treatments (75% and 100% of total required nitrogen) showed the highest chlorophyll meter readings and total yield. As a final result, chlorophyll meter readings of 67.20 and 56.55 at 7 and 10-leaf growth stages, respectively, means that the amounts of 3 split applications of nitrogen fertilizer satisfied the plants nitrogen requirement for various growth stages. |
